INTRODUCTION

SOFTSCAN studio lighting has been designed as professional, continuous lighting with either a 'Daylight' or 'Tungsten' balance for use with Digital Imaging, Film and Video.

The SOFTSCAN system utilizes recent advances in the technology of both lamps and lamp control to provide a powerful, high frequency, fluorescent lightsource that is powerful, easy to use, and provides control suitable for professional studio applications. SOFTSCAN produces around 300-400% more light per watt than a tungsten lamp, resulting in much lower energy losses in the form of heat, which in turn means much lower power consumption for the same level of illumination, and a greatly reduced heat output. The low level of infra-red in the light output from SOFTSCAN allows a subject to be lit without the associated radiant heat. This provides a considerably more comfortable environment for people, or for any subject, such as food, which can suffer under hot lighting.

When compared to other forms of lighting, the lamps used in the SOFTSCAN system will last many times longer than either tungsten or HMI. Lamp life is around 6000 hours, which over time can also represent a considerable saving in lamp replacement costs.

SOFTSCAN is available in 40W,110W, 220W, 330W, and 440W power options, any of which can be supplied with simple switching, or as fully dimmable with compatibility to DMX 512, analogue 1-10V systems, Phase cutting dimmers, or Manchester Coded systems.

SOFTSCAN uses compact fluorescent lamps, arranged in pairs, with each pair housed within a large parabolic reflector. This arrangement gives SOFTSCAN lighting a characteristic directional and 'punchy' quality allowing for a longer throw of light if required. If a softer, wider spread of light is preferred, the simple attachment of either a prismatic or opal diffuser will provide it. Because of the very low heat generated by the head, diffusion is much easier with SOFTSCAN than with other forms of continuous lighting. Each model can be supplied with either a Daylight balance (5300 Deg. K) or Tungsten balance (3200 Deg. K), and lamps can be easily interchanged allowing great flexibility from a single lighting head. All SOFTSCAN models are supplied with fully adjustable reflective barn doors which have detachable reflective fabric corners, giving virtually no light spill outside the target area. Reflective barn doors increase the source area by around 100mm in both dimensions.

Honeycombs with either a 20 deg, 40 deg, or 60 deg. beam angle are available, and barn doors will also accept a 'gel frame' which can accept filters or rigid opal or prismatic diffusers. Mounting an opal diffuser will convert the barn doors to a 'softbox', ideal for shooting highly reflective subjects.

DIMMING

SOFTSCAN lighting can be supplied either with fully variable dimming or with switching for pairs of lamps giving some flexibility in light output, varying with the numbers of lamps. A 110w unit would have simply on or off switching, whereas a 220w unit could have half or full power, a 330w unit would have switching in 1/3 stages, and a 440w unit in 1/4 stages.

SOFTSCAN lighting supplied with fully variable dimming has been designed primarily for Television studio applications, and will allow variable output control down to between 0% and 3%. Because the lamps used in SOFTSCAN lighting heads are fluorescent, there is little change in colour temperature when lamps are dimmed, allowing flexibility in the levels of illumination within an installation without the need to reposition lights.

SOFTSCAN can be supplied with integral DMX 512 1990 de-coding, with simple address setting and indication of DMX signal, and can be supplied to either set to lowest level or hold last frame in the event of a break in DMX signal. Compatibility with Phase cutting dimmers is also available giving full control down to zero through a single connection. Other options are available to order including analogue 0-10v control and Manchester Code control.
